"If you think Hello Kitty is a cat, then you're whole life is a lie."
In an interview with the LA Times, an anthropologist Cristine R. Yano revealed that she had been corrected by Sanrio (Hello Kitty creators). After she (Yano) referred the character as a cat, they (Sanrio) responded by claiming that it isn't a cat, but rather a female child.
"I was corrected—very firmly. That's one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it's called Charmmy Kitty." Yano said.
